Radon Testing Serving the Greater Syracuse and Utica Areas
Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and chemically inert radioactive gas, and can be found in all 50 states. Many homes in New York have high radon gas levels. Most indoor radon comes into the building from the soil or rock underneath and around the foundation of the home. Once inside, the radon can become trapped and concentrated. The only way to know the radon level in a home, regardless of age, foundation type, heating system, air tightness, or building materials, is to conduct a radon level test. Elevated radon has been found in new homes, as well as homes over 150 years old.
Health Effects of Radon
Over time, high levels of radon can have a detrimental effect on health. Luckily, radon does not present any short-term health effects such as shortness of breath, coughing, headaches, or fever. But don’t get a false sense of security. Even if there are no immediate effects of radon, long-term exposure to radon can put the home’s occupants at an increased risk of lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has stated that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US.
